BARGAINING ALTERNATIVES FOR UNIVERSITY FACULTIES

Abstract

This article maintains that different bargaining strategies are appropriate for faculties at different institutions of higher education. It assumes as a "given" the need for collective action by university faculties in the 1970's. This argument is based on the premise that selection of the appropriate bargaining strategy by faculties depends on a realistic appraisal of the environment in which collective goals are sought. The article focuses on determining the most appropriate or pragmatic strategy for faculties at large public universities and concludes with a description of this strategy.
