INTEREST-BASED COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AT YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY: A FRESH ORGANIZATIONAL APPROACH

Abstract

During 1993 negotiations, the faculty union and administration at Youngstown State University of Ohio agreed to experiment with the interest-based bargaining approach to collective bargaining. For both union and management, which had been engaged in traditional positional bargaining since 1972, this constituted a major departure from past practice. Working closely with skilled trainers from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the parties successfully concluded a three-year agreement which provided, in addition to standard economic benefits, for greatly enhanced faculty participation in the academic governance of the university. The agreement has been hailed as the beginning of a new era in labor-management relations at YSU.
